Optimal Paper Production

Full-Service Bearing Technology

FAG Kugelfischer is a pioneer in the rolling bearing industry. In 1883, Friedrich Fischer designed a ball grinding machine. This idea is regarded as the historic beginning of the rolling bearing industry. INA’s success story began in 1949 with the development of the needle roller and cage assembly by Dr. Georg Schaeffler, an ingenious idea that helped the needleroller bearing achieve an industrial breakthrough.

Radial Insert Ball Bearings and Housing Units

Black Series

The new radial insert ball bearing and housing units FAG Black Series from Schaeffler give easy mounting, smooth running and high reliability and thus allow particularly economical bearing arrangements. The dimensions of the FAG housings, made from flake graphite cast iron and with a primer paint coating, conform to JIS B 1559. These single piece cast housings can support moderate to high radial and axial loads. The radial insert ball bearings have basic protection against corrosion due to the Durotect®B coating. The bearing units are particularly suitable for applications with moderate to high loads.

Cost Savings through Changing to an FAG SACR Bearing

Visy Pulp & Paper is one of the world‘s leading packaging, paper and recycling companies. 98 percent of the recycled paper is a post consumer waste product. Challenge for Schaeffler: As the dryer section tender side bearings were prematurely failing due to lubrication issues, Visy requested assistance from Schaeffler Australia. To solve the problem Schaeffler‘s proposal was to replace the original toroid roller bearing with an FAG SACR bearing with centre feed lubrication.

SNS Plummer Block Housing

50 % increase in bearing life

This is the life! Product life in this new generation of SNS plummer block housings is so good that spherical roller bearings last up to 50 % longer than usual. This is due to a unique housing design: When in operation, the SNS housing proactively self-adjusts to the bearing.

Saving Costs by Reconditioning of Hybrid Deep Groove Ball Bearings

The customer is a leading player in the international paper market. The portfolio comprises newsprint and book paper, magazine paper, fine paper, consumer board, industrial packaging and wood products. Challenge for Schaeffler The customer uses hybrid deep groove ball bearings (made up of ceramic balls and steel rings) in his spreader rolls as these bearings offer numerous advantages, like less lubricant consumption or higher speeds. Although the initial costs of these bearings are significantly higher than those of standard bearings, they still are cost-effective if all influencing factors are taken into account.

Vibration Diagnosis for Failure Detection on a Paper Machine

The customer is a Spanish cardboard manufacturer with an annual production capacity of 80 000 tons and sales of 25 million euros. Challenge for Schaeffler A high plant availability is a key factor for profitable business in paper mills. Unplanned shutdowns cause expensive losses due to production stoppages. In the plant in Northern Spain the customer experienced about four unplanned shutdowns each year.

Cost Reduction through condition-based Maintenance

Industrie Cartarie Tronchetti (ICT) is a paper company with manufacturing sites in Italy, Spain and Poland. With seven plants, ICT has achieved sales around 400 million euros in 2007 / 2008 and an annual growth of 18 percent. Challenge for Schaeffler Due to the high technical requirements of a paper plant ICT wanted to introduce condition-based maintenance on its Spanish site. Thus, the company was looking for a partner who could fulfill this demanding task.

The ”ideal Floating Bearing” for a highly loaded Calender Roll

The Finnish customer produces magazine papers, newsprint, fine and specialty papers, as well as converted products and wood products. Challenge for Schaeffler Shortly after the paper machine was first put into operation, several bearings in the thermo rolls of the soft calender failed. Investigations showed that the main cause of these failures was the axial load that acted on the bearings. Due to this axial load, the two rows of rolling elements were loaded unevenly; as a result, bearings were failing prematurely.

Coated Rolling Elements to avoid Slippage Damage in Calender Bearings

Metso Paper, Inc., Finland

In 2004, the Finnish manufacturer Metso Paper, Inc. has delivered the PM 19 paper machine to Shandong Sun Paper Co. Ltd. in China. Challenge for Schaeffler: The calender consists of two pairs of rolls that are arranged one behind the other. In the top roll position, a combination of low loads and insufficient lubrication can cause damage to the raceways. The risk of slippage – and thus the risk of slippage damage – had to be reduced.

Split spherical roller bearings

Costs savings through rapid bearing replacement at difficult to access bearing locations

Split spherical roller bearings are principally used where the replacement of unsplit spherical roller bearings would require costly additional work, involving the removal of gears or couplings, the dismounting of drives or the dismantling of shaft power trains. The use of split spherical roller bearings reduces the downtime of machinery and plant.
